Foods
The Foods Classes at Iron Horse MS include Foods B: Baking and Foods C: Meals, both of which are available to all 7th and 8th graders.
Students in either Foods B or Foods C focus on the importance of kitchen safety, introduction of basic kitchen utensils, and the proper use of equipment. Additional work will be on food preparation, manners, personal nutrition, and participating within a cooperative learning environment.
Foods B: Baking allows students to work in collaborative groups to prepare a variety of recipes that ultimately go into the oven. This includes units on cookies, quick breads, pies and tarts, yeast breads, and the science behind how it all works. Ingredient knowledge and selection is also an emphasis of the class.
Foods C: Meals allows students to work in collaborative groups to prepare a variety of recipes from breakfast items through to desserts. Students will learn about table etiquette, knife skills, spices, cheeses, and food choices from a variety of different cultures. Ingredient knowledge and selection is also an emphasis of the class.
